There was a time where joint stiffness ruled my mornings, headaches controlled my afternoons, sugar cravings consumed my evenings and sleeplessness made the cycle repeat day after day after day.
Already on a handful of over the counter medications, it didn’t occur to me that I could use food to resolve my health issues. Why? Because I was doing everything to the book…or so I thought. I welcomed the morning with a good breakfast, ate small snacks throughout the day, drank milk to build strong bones, and chose plant-based proteins over fatty meats to benefit my heart.
Let’s read through the lines a little bit here, something I couldn’t have done when I was in the thick of it because I didn’t see what I was doing to myself. My breakfast was comprised of cereal and milk with fruit juice, snacks were low-calorie packaged cookies and chips, plant-based proteins were riddled with gluten proteins. Everything came from a package, box or bag.
I prescribed to the standard way of eating. So, when it came time to assess my health, nutrition didn’t play a role in my treatment plan.
More medications, more doctors’ appointments, more frustration.
I remembered a time when I felt balanced, light and full of energy. I wanted that feeling back.
Becoming a holistic nutritionist changed everything for me. I quickly realized that my packaged-based food choices and cookie cutter eating style wasn’t benefiting me. It was the wakeup call I needed to start paying more attention to how I felt.
Easing into the day with a mason jar of green juice became my favourite thing to do. For the first time in my life, I was doing something good for my body, and it felt amazing.
After a couple of months of sipping juice in the morning, I started incorporating smoothies into my afternoon routine. It felt so much better than stuffing myself with a huge dinner and dealing with the digestive fallout afterwards. In fact, the more fresh foods I consumed, the better my digestion became.
Pouring fibre and nutrients into every cell in my body helped my gut heal fully for the first time in years. I started getting that feeling back. With each passing day, I became more and more attuned to what my body needed to attain that feeling. Not just a couple of days in the week, but every single day. No more headaches, no more exhaustion, I was a changed woman.
Being stiff, dealing with headaches, battling sugar cravings and pushing yourself through the day on limited sleep is not normal. We, all of us, have the potential to feel amazing. And it starts with how we treat our bodies – the quality of foods we eat, the people we choose to surround ourselves with, and the thoughts we think.
Here are 3 steps that I took to boost my health:
- Fresh-pressed juice in the morning. Used to wake up the digestion and pack in some serious nutrients.
- Planned meals in advance. To get in the groove of nourishing my body with better food, planned meals quickly became a habit and allowed me to understand how my body felt at its best so I knew where my limits were.
- Ate fat with every meal. Migrating myself from the low-fat mentality to an eating style that best suited me and my body’s needs. I now enjoy meals that are rich in healthy fats – coconut oil, fish oils, natural animal fats, to regulate hormones and nourish my cells.
Who has time to focus on the health of their body? You do. We all do. We have to make time.
The way I see it? All I have is my body. My body allows me to be here. It enables me to weave my life experiences – to feel joy, laughter, companionship, even suffering. Without it, none of these experiences would exist for me. It is my instrument of life (and it’s your instrument, too!)
